What is Contract Administration?

Contract Administration is the role fulfilled by a construction professional to specify, tender and oversee construction work on behalf of the Employer. They will normally be responsible for drafting a formal building contract and issuing relevant notices/documentation as required by the contract. Typically, if a Design and Build contract is chosen, the role is renamed as ‘Employer’s Agent’, although many of the processes in practice are very similar.

This role is important as it means that the client has experienced, professional representation who can guide them through the intricacies of the construction process, and help to explain technical detail.

Key features you should know about Contract Administration

There are a multitude of complex risks which arise from commissioning construction work. Most clients do not have access to specialist in house construction knowledge. Whether you are a residential or commercial client, we can work with you to minimise construction risks relating to cost, quality, timeliness, and health and safety. Dependent on the type of project, we can act in a Contractor Administrator or Employer’s Agent role.

A good contract administrator will work with you to ensure that your building project is delivered to the standard you need, specifying and tendering work on your behalf. They will prepare a detailed contract, issuing relevant documentation at each stage to protect your legal position should a dispute arise, deal with contractor queries and ensure that construction work is of satisfactory quality. Using a contract administrator frees your time to focus on what you are best at, and helps to reduce the overall cost of construction by ensuring that each aspect of the build is carefully considered before work is carried out.

Our surveyors will work with you to ensure that your construction requirements are exactly understood. Their experience means that they are in a position to ensure that your requirements are expertly translated into a specification for the contractor and can ensure that expensive changes during the construction process are minimised and their effects mitigated. We can help to ensure that your project is delivered to suit your requirements, on time and on budget.
